What is ACL Repair?
ACL repair is a brand new technique for dealing with ACL injuries. It was established in New York in 2012 and since then has become a popular choice in certain patients. Instead of changing your ACL with a graft (like in ACL reconstruction) we take your existing ACL, stitch the tear and fix the ACL back in its place using a bio-anchor device. This is all done using a camera surgery and takes approximately 20 minutes.
The results of ACL repair in carefully selected patients are spectacular. Patients return to sports in 3-4 months after an ACL repair.
What is ACL Reconstruction?
ACL Reconstruction or changing the ACL with a graft is the gold standard for most ACL surgeries. Your dead ACL tissue is removed, and a graft is used to make a new ligament. This ligament will last your life and serves you well. The procedure typically takes 20-35 minutes to do and is a tried and tested method with excellent results.
What is difference between ACL Repair and Reconstruction?
In ACL repair we are repairing your torn ligament internally rather than changing the ligament with a graft. In ACL reconstruction we change the ligament with a graft.
Should I have ACL Repair or Reconstruction?
This depends on many factors especially tear type and time since surgery and the age of the patient. We will decide this together.
