Immediately when the ACL breaks patients often state they hear a noise such as a pop and there is a feeling of twisting of the knee. Once this happens some players fall down others are able to walk a few steps with discomfort. Most patients have to be taken off the ground with some help. Swelling comes over night in these injuries and with swelling comes pain and difficulty with walking. Over the next few days, if managed properly, the pain and swelling gradually disappear and patients are able to stand and walk again. With time patients can often jog and run in a straight line even with an ACL deficient knee.
However, any movement that involves turning or specific angles such as walking up and down the stairs or running and immediately changing direction becomes difficulty. With time patients often complain of these problems and feeling of twisting of the knee or not being comfortable on the knee with their weight.
If pain continues after an ACL injury it maybe you have an associated meniscus (shocker, shock absorber, washer or cartilage) tear or a defect in the cartilage.
